Unbeknownst to most K-12 parents, a federal legal battle over the Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) race-conscious school program is unfolding with potential consequences for their children’s education. After the 1776 Project Foundation filed a complaint challenging LAUSD’s Predominantly Hispanic, Black, Asian, or other non-Anglo (PHBAO) program and the U.S. Department of Justice moved to intervene in the lawsuit, the board voted weeks later to issue more than 3,200 preliminary layoff notices — raising questions about whether legal challenges to equity policies are influencing staffing and budget decisions across the district.
